How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
  2. Multiply: 0.8 × 98 = 78.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 78.4 ÷ 98 × 100 = 80%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 80/100 = part/98, so part = 80 × 98 ÷ 100 = 78.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =80%*98. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

78.4 is the 80% share of 98. The remaining 20% is 19.6, and the two parts add back up to 98.

Discounts: 80% off an item priced $98 saves $78.4, so you pay $19.6.

Adding and taking away 80%

Increasing 98 by 80% gives 176.4 and decreasing it by 80% gives 19.6. These do not cancel out: raising 98 by 80% and then lowering the result by 80% ends at 35.28, because the second 80% is taken of a bigger number.
