How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 81 ÷ 100 = 0.81
  2. Multiply: 0.81 × 12 = 9.72
  3. Check: Work backwards: 9.72 ÷ 12 × 100 = 81%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 81/100 = part/12, so part = 81 × 12 ÷ 100 = 9.72. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =81%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

9.72 is the 81% share of 12. The remaining 19% is 2.28, and the two parts add back up to 12.

Discounts: 81% off an item priced $12 saves $9.72, so you pay $2.28.

Adding and taking away 81%

Increasing 12 by 81% gives 21.72 and decreasing it by 81% gives 2.28. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 81% and then lowering the result by 81% ends at 4.1268, because the second 81% is taken of a bigger number.
