How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
  2. Multiply: 0.12 × 81 = 9.72
  3. Check: Work backwards: 9.72 ÷ 81 × 100 = 12%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/81, so part = 12 × 81 ÷ 100 = 9.72. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =12%*81. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

9.72 is the 12% share of 81. The remaining 88% is 71.28, and the two parts add back up to 81.

Discounts: 12% off an item priced $81 saves $9.72, so you pay $71.28.

Adding and taking away 12%

Increasing 81 by 12% gives 90.72 and decreasing it by 12% gives 71.28. These do not cancel out: raising 81 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 79.8336, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.
