How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 84 ÷ 100 = 0.84
  2. Multiply: 0.84 × 3 = 2.52
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.52 ÷ 3 × 100 = 84%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 84/100 = part/3, so part = 84 × 3 ÷ 100 = 2.52. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =84%*3. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.52 is the 84% share of 3. The remaining 16% is 0.48, and the two parts add back up to 3.

Discounts: 84% off an item priced $3 saves $2.52, so you pay $0.48.

Adding and taking away 84%

Increasing 3 by 84% gives 5.52 and decreasing it by 84% gives 0.48. These do not cancel out: raising 3 by 84% and then lowering the result by 84% ends at 0.8832, because the second 84% is taken of a bigger number.
