How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 85 ÷ 100 = 0.85
- Multiply: 0.85 × 12 = 10.2
- Check: Work backwards: 10.2 ÷ 12 × 100 = 85%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 85/100 = part/12, so part = 85 × 12 ÷ 100 = 10.2. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =85%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
10.2 is the 85% share of 12. The remaining 15% is 1.8, and the two parts add back up to 12.
Discounts: 85% off an item priced $12 saves $10.2, so you pay $1.8.
Adding and taking away 85%
Increasing 12 by 85% gives 22.2 and decreasing it by 85% gives 1.8. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 85% and then lowering the result by 85% ends at 3.33, because the second 85% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 12% of 85. 85% of 12 and 12% of 85 are always equal (both are 85 × 12 ÷ 100 = 10.2), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
