How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 89 ÷ 100 = 0.89
- Multiply: 0.89 × 1 = 0.89
- Check: Work backwards: 0.89 ÷ 1 × 100 = 89%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 89/100 = part/1, so part = 89 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.89. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =89%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.89 is the 89% share of 1. The remaining 11% is 0.11, and the two parts add back up to 1.
Discounts: 89% off an item priced $1 saves $0.89, so you pay $0.11.
Adding and taking away 89%
Increasing 1 by 89% gives 1.89 and decreasing it by 89% gives 0.11. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 89% and then lowering the result by 89% ends at 0.2079, because the second 89% is taken of a bigger number.
