How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 9 ÷ 100 = 0.09
  2. Multiply: 0.09 × 27 = 2.43
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.43 ÷ 27 × 100 = 9%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 9/100 = part/27, so part = 9 × 27 ÷ 100 = 2.43. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =9%*27. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.43 is the 9% share of 27. The remaining 91% is 24.57, and the two parts add back up to 27.

Discounts: 9% off an item priced $27 saves $2.43, so you pay $24.57.

Adding and taking away 9%

Increasing 27 by 9% gives 29.43 and decreasing it by 9% gives 24.57. These do not cancel out: raising 27 by 9% and then lowering the result by 9% ends at 26.7813, because the second 9% is taken of a bigger number.
