How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 9 ÷ 100 = 0.09
  2. Multiply: 0.09 × 50 = 4.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.5 ÷ 50 × 100 = 9%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 9/100 = part/50, so part = 9 × 50 ÷ 100 = 4.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =9%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.5 is the 9% share of 50. The remaining 91% is 45.5, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 9% off an item priced $50 saves $4.5, so you pay $45.5.

Adding and taking away 9%

Increasing 50 by 9% gives 54.5 and decreasing it by 9% gives 45.5. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 9% and then lowering the result by 9% ends at 49.595, because the second 9% is taken of a bigger number.
