How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 65 = 9.75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 9.75 ÷ 65 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/65, so part = 15 × 65 ÷ 100 = 9.75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*65. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

9.75 is the 15% share of 65. The remaining 85% is 55.25, and the two parts add back up to 65.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $65 saves $9.75, so you pay $55.25.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 65 by 15% gives 74.75 and decreasing it by 15% gives 55.25. These do not cancel out: raising 65 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 63.5375, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
