How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 91 ÷ 100 = 0.91
  2. Multiply: 0.91 × 2 = 1.82
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.82 ÷ 2 × 100 = 91%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 91/100 = part/2, so part = 91 × 2 ÷ 100 = 1.82. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =91%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.82 is the 91% share of 2. The remaining 9% is 0.18, and the two parts add back up to 2.

Discounts: 91% off an item priced $2 saves $1.82, so you pay $0.18.

Adding and taking away 91%

Increasing 2 by 91% gives 3.82 and decreasing it by 91% gives 0.18. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 91% and then lowering the result by 91% ends at 0.3438, because the second 91% is taken of a bigger number.
