How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 95 ÷ 100 = 0.95
  2. Multiply: 0.95 × 68 = 64.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 64.6 ÷ 68 × 100 = 95%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 95/100 = part/68, so part = 95 × 68 ÷ 100 = 64.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =95%*68. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

64.6 is the 95% share of 68. The remaining 5% is 3.4, and the two parts add back up to 68.

Discounts: 95% off an item priced $68 saves $64.6, so you pay $3.4.

Adding and taking away 95%

Increasing 68 by 95% gives 132.6 and decreasing it by 95% gives 3.4. These do not cancel out: raising 68 by 95% and then lowering the result by 95% ends at 6.63, because the second 95% is taken of a bigger number.
