How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 96 ÷ 100 = 0.96
- Multiply: 0.96 × 2 = 1.92
- Check: Work backwards: 1.92 ÷ 2 × 100 = 96%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 96/100 = part/2, so part = 96 × 2 ÷ 100 = 1.92. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =96%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.92 is the 96% share of 2. The remaining 4% is 0.08, and the two parts add back up to 2.
Discounts: 96% off an item priced $2 saves $1.92, so you pay $0.08.
Adding and taking away 96%
Increasing 2 by 96% gives 3.92 and decreasing it by 96% gives 0.08. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 96% and then lowering the result by 96% ends at 0.1568, because the second 96% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 2% of 96. 96% of 2 and 2% of 96 are always equal (both are 96 × 2 ÷ 100 = 1.92), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
