How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
- Multiply: 0.02 × 96 = 1.92
- Check: Work backwards: 1.92 ÷ 96 × 100 = 2%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/96, so part = 2 × 96 ÷ 100 = 1.92. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =2%*96. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.92 is the 2% share of 96. The remaining 98% is 94.08, and the two parts add back up to 96.
Discounts: 2% off an item priced $96 saves $1.92, so you pay $94.08.
Adding and taking away 2%
Increasing 96 by 2% gives 97.92 and decreasing it by 2% gives 94.08. These do not cancel out: raising 96 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 95.9616, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 96% of 2. 2% of 96 and 96% of 2 are always equal (both are 2 × 96 ÷ 100 = 1.92), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
