How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 98 ÷ 100 = 0.98
  2. Multiply: 0.98 × 16 = 15.68
  3. Check: Work backwards: 15.68 ÷ 16 × 100 = 98%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 98/100 = part/16, so part = 98 × 16 ÷ 100 = 15.68. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =98%*16. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

15.68 is the 98% share of 16. The remaining 2% is 0.32, and the two parts add back up to 16.

Discounts: 98% off an item priced $16 saves $15.68, so you pay $0.32.

Adding and taking away 98%

Increasing 16 by 98% gives 31.68 and decreasing it by 98% gives 0.32. These do not cancel out: raising 16 by 98% and then lowering the result by 98% ends at 0.6336, because the second 98% is taken of a bigger number.
