How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 99 ÷ 100 = 0.99
- Multiply: 0.99 × 40 = 39.6
- Check: Work backwards: 39.6 ÷ 40 × 100 = 99%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 99/100 = part/40, so part = 99 × 40 ÷ 100 = 39.6. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =99%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
39.6 is the 99% share of 40. The remaining 1% is 0.4, and the two parts add back up to 40.
Discounts: 99% off an item priced $40 saves $39.6, so you pay $0.4.
Adding and taking away 99%
Increasing 40 by 99% gives 79.6 and decreasing it by 99% gives 0.4. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 99% and then lowering the result by 99% ends at 0.796, because the second 99% is taken of a bigger number.
