How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 99 ÷ 100 = 0.99
  2. Multiply: 0.99 × 5 = 4.95
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.95 ÷ 5 × 100 = 99%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 99/100 = part/5, so part = 99 × 5 ÷ 100 = 4.95. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =99%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.95 is the 99% share of 5. The remaining 1% is 0.05, and the two parts add back up to 5.

Discounts: 99% off an item priced $5 saves $4.95, so you pay $0.05.

Adding and taking away 99%

Increasing 5 by 99% gives 9.95 and decreasing it by 99% gives 0.05. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 99% and then lowering the result by 99% ends at 0.0995, because the second 99% is taken of a bigger number.
