How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 99 ÷ 100 = 0.99
  2. Multiply: 0.99 × 98 = 97.02
  3. Check: Work backwards: 97.02 ÷ 98 × 100 = 99%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 99/100 = part/98, so part = 99 × 98 ÷ 100 = 97.02. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =99%*98. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

97.02 is the 99% share of 98. The remaining 1% is 0.98, and the two parts add back up to 98.

Discounts: 99% off an item priced $98 saves $97.02, so you pay $0.98.

Adding and taking away 99%

Increasing 98 by 99% gives 195.02 and decreasing it by 99% gives 0.98. These do not cancel out: raising 98 by 99% and then lowering the result by 99% ends at 1.9502, because the second 99% is taken of a bigger number.
