How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Divide the part by it: 25 ÷ 0.1 = 250
- Check: Work forwards: 10% of 250 is 0.1 × 250 = 25.
Another method. As a proportion: 25/whole = 10/100, so whole = 25 × 100 ÷ 10 = 250. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =25/10%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.
What the result means
25 is the 10% share of 250. The other 90% is 225.
Discounts: if 25 dollars is a 10% saving, the original price was $250.
Using 1% as a stepping stone
If 10% is 25, then 1% is 25 ÷ 10 = 2.5, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 25, 50% is 125 and 100% is 250.
