How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 50 ÷ 100 = 0.5
  2. Divide the part by it: 25 ÷ 0.5 = 50
  3. Check: Work forwards: 50% of 50 is 0.5 × 50 = 25.

Another method. As a proportion: 25/whole = 50/100, so whole = 25 × 100 ÷ 50 = 50. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =25/50%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

25 is the 50% share of 50. The other 50% is 25.

Discounts: if 25 dollars is a 50% saving, the original price was $50.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 50% is 25, then 1% is 25 ÷ 50 = 0.5, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 5, 50% is 25 and 100% is 50.
