How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Divide the part by it: 50 ÷ 0.25 = 200
  3. Check: Work forwards: 25% of 200 is 0.25 × 200 = 50.

Another method. As a proportion: 50/whole = 25/100, so whole = 50 × 100 ÷ 25 = 200. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =50/25%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

50 is the 25% share of 200. The other 75% is 150.

Discounts: if 50 dollars is a 25% saving, the original price was $200.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 25% is 50, then 1% is 50 ÷ 25 = 2, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 20, 50% is 100 and 100% is 200.
