How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Divide the part by it: 75 ÷ 0.15 = 500
  3. Check: Work forwards: 15% of 500 is 0.15 × 500 = 75.

Another method. As a proportion: 75/whole = 15/100, so whole = 75 × 100 ÷ 15 = 500. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =75/15%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

75 is the 15% share of 500. The other 85% is 425.

Discounts: if 75 dollars is a 15% saving, the original price was $500.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 15% is 75, then 1% is 75 ÷ 15 = 5, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 50, 50% is 250 and 100% is 500.
