How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Divide the part by it: 15 ÷ 0.6 = 25
  3. Check: Work forwards: 60% of 25 is 0.6 × 25 = 15.

Another method. As a proportion: 15/whole = 60/100, so whole = 15 × 100 ÷ 60 = 25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15/60%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

15 is the 60% share of 25. The other 40% is 10.

Discounts: if 15 dollars is a 60% saving, the original price was $25.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 60% is 15, then 1% is 15 ÷ 60 = 0.25, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 2.5, 50% is 12.5 and 100% is 25.
