How to work it out
- Work out the discount: 10% of 10 = 0.1 × 10 = 1
- Take it off the price: 10 − 1 = 9
- Check: Add the saving back: 9 + 1 = 10.
Another method. In one step: you pay 90% of the price, so 0.9 × 10 = 9. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10*(1-10%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.
What the result means
After 10% off, you pay 90% of the price: 9 instead of 10, a saving of 1.
Shopping: an item marked $10 with 10% off costs $9 at the till, before any sales tax.
Stacked discounts
10% off followed by another 10% off is 19% off in total, not 20%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 10% of 10. Two discounts do not add up: 10% off and then another 10% off leaves 8.1, not 8, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
