How to work it out

  1. Work out the discount: 50% of 10 = 0.5 × 10 = 5
  2. Take it off the price: 10 − 5 = 5
  3. Check: Add the saving back: 5 + 5 = 10.

Another method. In one step: you pay 50% of the price, so 0.5 × 10 = 5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =10*(1-50%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.

What the result means

After 50% off, you pay 50% of the price: 5 instead of 10, a saving of 5.

Shopping: an item marked $10 with 50% off costs $5 at the till, before any sales tax.

Stacked discounts

50% off followed by another 50% off is 75% off in total, not 100%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 50% of 10. Two discounts do not add up: 50% off and then another 50% off leaves 2.5, not 0, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
