How to work it out

  1. Work out the discount: 30% of 10 = 0.3 × 10 = 3
  2. Take it off the price: 10 − 3 = 7
  3. Check: Add the saving back: 7 + 3 = 10.

Another method. In one step: you pay 70% of the price, so 0.7 × 10 = 7. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =10*(1-30%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.

What the result means

After 30% off, you pay 70% of the price: 7 instead of 10, a saving of 3.

Shopping: an item marked $10 with 30% off costs $7 at the till, before any sales tax.

Stacked discounts

30% off followed by another 30% off is 51% off in total, not 60%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 30% of 10. Two discounts do not add up: 30% off and then another 30% off leaves 4.9, not 4, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
