How to work it out

  1. Work out the discount: 10% of 100 = 0.1 × 100 = 10
  2. Take it off the price: 100 − 10 = 90
  3. Check: Add the saving back: 90 + 10 = 100.

Another method. In one step: you pay 90% of the price, so 0.9 × 100 = 90. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =100*(1-10%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.

What the result means

After 10% off, you pay 90% of the price: 90 instead of 100, a saving of 10.

Shopping: an item marked $100 with 10% off costs $90 at the till, before any sales tax.

Stacked discounts

10% off followed by another 10% off is 19% off in total, not 20%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 10% of 100. Two discounts do not add up: 10% off and then another 10% off leaves 81, not 80, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
