How to work it out

  1. Work out the discount: 40% of 100 = 0.4 × 100 = 40
  2. Take it off the price: 100 − 40 = 60
  3. Check: Add the saving back: 60 + 40 = 100.

Another method. In one step: you pay 60% of the price, so 0.6 × 100 = 60. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =100*(1-40%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.

What the result means

After 40% off, you pay 60% of the price: 60 instead of 100, a saving of 40.

Shopping: an item marked $100 with 40% off costs $60 at the till, before any sales tax.

Stacked discounts

40% off followed by another 40% off is 64% off in total, not 80%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 40% of 100. Two discounts do not add up: 40% off and then another 40% off leaves 36, not 20, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
