How to work it out

  1. Work out the discount: 30% of 100 = 0.3 × 100 = 30
  2. Take it off the price: 100 − 30 = 70
  3. Check: Add the saving back: 70 + 30 = 100.

Another method. In one step: you pay 70% of the price, so 0.7 × 100 = 70. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =100*(1-30%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.

What the result means

After 30% off, you pay 70% of the price: 70 instead of 100, a saving of 30.

Shopping: an item marked $100 with 30% off costs $70 at the till, before any sales tax.

Stacked discounts

30% off followed by another 30% off is 51% off in total, not 60%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 30% of 100. Two discounts do not add up: 30% off and then another 30% off leaves 49, not 40, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
