How to work it out
- Work out the discount: 10% of 75 = 0.1 × 75 = 7.5
- Take it off the price: 75 − 7.5 = 67.5
- Check: Add the saving back: 67.5 + 7.5 = 75.
Another method. In one step: you pay 90% of the price, so 0.9 × 75 = 67.5. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =75*(1-10%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.
What the result means
After 10% off, you pay 90% of the price: 67.5 instead of 75, a saving of 7.5.
Shopping: an item marked $75 with 10% off costs $67.5 at the till, before any sales tax.
Stacked discounts
10% off followed by another 10% off is 19% off in total, not 20%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 10% of 75. Two discounts do not add up: 10% off and then another 10% off leaves 60.75, not 60, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
