How to work it out

  1. Work out the discount: 60% of 100 = 0.6 × 100 = 60
  2. Take it off the price: 100 − 60 = 40
  3. Check: Add the saving back: 40 + 60 = 100.

Another method. In one step: you pay 40% of the price, so 0.4 × 100 = 40. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =100*(1-60%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.

What the result means

After 60% off, you pay 40% of the price: 40 instead of 100, a saving of 60.

Shopping: an item marked $100 with 60% off costs $40 at the till, before any sales tax.

Stacked discounts

60% off followed by another 60% off is 84% off in total, not 100%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 60% of 100. Two discounts do not add up: 60% off and then another 60% off leaves 16, not 0, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
