How to work it out

  1. Work out the discount: 75% of 100 = 0.75 × 100 = 75
  2. Take it off the price: 100 − 75 = 25
  3. Check: Add the saving back: 25 + 75 = 100.

Another method. In one step: you pay 25% of the price, so 0.25 × 100 = 25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =100*(1-75%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.

What the result means

After 75% off, you pay 25% of the price: 25 instead of 100, a saving of 75.

Shopping: an item marked $100 with 75% off costs $25 at the till, before any sales tax.

Stacked discounts

75% off followed by another 75% off is 93.75% off in total, not 100%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 75% of 100. Two discounts do not add up: 75% off and then another 75% off leaves 6.25, not 0, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
