How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
- Multiply: 0.01 × 29 = 0.29
- Check: Work backwards: 0.29 ÷ 29 × 100 = 1%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/29, so part = 1 × 29 ÷ 100 = 0.29. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =1%*29. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.29 is the 1% share of 29. The remaining 99% is 28.71, and the two parts add back up to 29.
Discounts: 1% off an item priced $29 saves $0.29, so you pay $28.71.
Adding and taking away 1%
Increasing 29 by 1% gives 29.29 and decreasing it by 1% gives 28.71. These do not cancel out: raising 29 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 28.9971, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
