How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 29 ÷ 100 = 0.29
  2. Multiply: 0.29 × 1 = 0.29
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.29 ÷ 1 × 100 = 29%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 29/100 = part/1, so part = 29 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.29. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =29%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.29 is the 29% share of 1. The remaining 71% is 0.71, and the two parts add back up to 1.

Discounts: 29% off an item priced $1 saves $0.29, so you pay $0.71.

Adding and taking away 29%

Increasing 1 by 29% gives 1.29 and decreasing it by 29% gives 0.71. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 29% and then lowering the result by 29% ends at 0.9159, because the second 29% is taken of a bigger number.
