How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 32 = 0.32
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.32 ÷ 32 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/32, so part = 1 × 32 ÷ 100 = 0.32. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*32. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.32 is the 1% share of 32. The remaining 99% is 31.68, and the two parts add back up to 32.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $32 saves $0.32, so you pay $31.68.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 32 by 1% gives 32.32 and decreasing it by 1% gives 31.68. These do not cancel out: raising 32 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 31.9968, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
