How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
- Multiply: 0.01 × 47 = 0.47
- Check: Work backwards: 0.47 ÷ 47 × 100 = 1%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/47, so part = 1 × 47 ÷ 100 = 0.47. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =1%*47. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.47 is the 1% share of 47. The remaining 99% is 46.53, and the two parts add back up to 47.
Discounts: 1% off an item priced $47 saves $0.47, so you pay $46.53.
Adding and taking away 1%
Increasing 47 by 1% gives 47.47 and decreasing it by 1% gives 46.53. These do not cancel out: raising 47 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 46.9953, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 47% of 1. 1% of 47 and 47% of 1 are always equal (both are 1 × 47 ÷ 100 = 0.47), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
