How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 66 = 0.66
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.66 ÷ 66 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/66, so part = 1 × 66 ÷ 100 = 0.66. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*66. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.66 is the 1% share of 66. The remaining 99% is 65.34, and the two parts add back up to 66.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $66 saves $0.66, so you pay $65.34.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 66 by 1% gives 66.66 and decreasing it by 1% gives 65.34. These do not cancel out: raising 66 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 65.9934, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
