How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 66 ÷ 100 = 0.66
- Multiply: 0.66 × 1 = 0.66
- Check: Work backwards: 0.66 ÷ 1 × 100 = 66%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 66/100 = part/1, so part = 66 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.66. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =66%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.66 is the 66% share of 1. The remaining 34% is 0.34, and the two parts add back up to 1.
Discounts: 66% off an item priced $1 saves $0.66, so you pay $0.34.
Adding and taking away 66%
Increasing 1 by 66% gives 1.66 and decreasing it by 66% gives 0.34. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 66% and then lowering the result by 66% ends at 0.5644, because the second 66% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 1% of 66. 66% of 1 and 1% of 66 are always equal (both are 66 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.66), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
