How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
- Multiply: 0.01 × 69 = 0.69
- Check: Work backwards: 0.69 ÷ 69 × 100 = 1%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/69, so part = 1 × 69 ÷ 100 = 0.69. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =1%*69. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.69 is the 1% share of 69. The remaining 99% is 68.31, and the two parts add back up to 69.
Discounts: 1% off an item priced $69 saves $0.69, so you pay $68.31.
Adding and taking away 1%
Increasing 69 by 1% gives 69.69 and decreasing it by 1% gives 68.31. These do not cancel out: raising 69 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 68.9931, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 69% of 1. 1% of 69 and 69% of 1 are always equal (both are 1 × 69 ÷ 100 = 0.69), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
