How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
  2. Multiply: 0.8 × 200 = 160
  3. Check: Work backwards: 160 ÷ 200 × 100 = 80%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 80/100 = part/200, so part = 80 × 200 ÷ 100 = 160. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =80%*200. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

160 is the 80% share of 200. The remaining 20% is 40, and the two parts add back up to 200.

Discounts: 80% off an item priced $200 saves $160, so you pay $40.

Adding and taking away 80%

Increasing 200 by 80% gives 360 and decreasing it by 80% gives 40. These do not cancel out: raising 200 by 80% and then lowering the result by 80% ends at 72, because the second 80% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 200% of 80. 80% of 200 and 200% of 80 are always equal (both are 80 × 200 ÷ 100 = 160), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
