How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 82 = 0.82
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.82 ÷ 82 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/82, so part = 1 × 82 ÷ 100 = 0.82. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*82. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.82 is the 1% share of 82. The remaining 99% is 81.18, and the two parts add back up to 82.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $82 saves $0.82, so you pay $81.18.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 82 by 1% gives 82.82 and decreasing it by 1% gives 81.18. These do not cancel out: raising 82 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 81.9918, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
