How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 83 = 0.83
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.83 ÷ 83 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/83, so part = 1 × 83 ÷ 100 = 0.83. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*83. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.83 is the 1% share of 83. The remaining 99% is 82.17, and the two parts add back up to 83.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $83 saves $0.83, so you pay $82.17.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 83 by 1% gives 83.83 and decreasing it by 1% gives 82.17. These do not cancel out: raising 83 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 82.9917, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
