How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 92 = 0.92
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.92 ÷ 92 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/92, so part = 1 × 92 ÷ 100 = 0.92. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*92. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.92 is the 1% share of 92. The remaining 99% is 91.08, and the two parts add back up to 92.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $92 saves $0.92, so you pay $91.08.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 92 by 1% gives 92.92 and decreasing it by 1% gives 91.08. These do not cancel out: raising 92 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 91.9908, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
