What is 10 Percent of 1?

10% of 1 = 0.1

1.1

How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
  2. Multiply: 0.1 × 1 = 0.1
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.1 ÷ 1 × 100 = 10%.

In a spreadsheet: =10%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.1 is the 10% share of 1. The remaining 90% is 0.9, and the two parts add back up to 1.

Discounts: 10% off an item priced $1 saves $0.1, so you pay $0.9.

Adding and taking away 10%

Increasing 1 by 10% gives 1.1 and decreasing it by 10% gives 0.9. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 0.99, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
