10.1

How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 10 = 0.1
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.1 ÷ 10 × 100 = 1%.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.1 is the 1% share of 10. The remaining 99% is 9.9, and the two parts add back up to 10.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $10 saves $0.1, so you pay $9.9.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 10 by 1% gives 10.1 and decreasing it by 1% gives 9.9. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 9.999, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
