How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 47 = 4.7
- Check: Work backwards: 4.7 ÷ 47 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/47, so part = 10 × 47 ÷ 100 = 4.7. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*47. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
4.7 is the 10% share of 47. The remaining 90% is 42.3, and the two parts add back up to 47.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $47 saves $4.7, so you pay $42.3.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 47 by 10% gives 51.7 and decreasing it by 10% gives 42.3. These do not cancel out: raising 47 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 46.53, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
