How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 500 = 50
- Check: Work backwards: 50 ÷ 500 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/500, so part = 10 × 500 ÷ 100 = 50. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*500. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
50 is the 10% share of 500. The remaining 90% is 450, and the two parts add back up to 500.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $500 saves $50, so you pay $450.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 500 by 10% gives 550 and decreasing it by 10% gives 450. These do not cancel out: raising 500 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 495, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 500% of 10. 10% of 500 and 500% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 500 ÷ 100 = 50), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
