How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 300 = 180
  3. Check: Work backwards: 180 ÷ 300 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/300, so part = 60 × 300 ÷ 100 = 180. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*300. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

180 is the 60% share of 300. The remaining 40% is 120, and the two parts add back up to 300.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $300 saves $180, so you pay $120.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 300 by 60% gives 480 and decreasing it by 60% gives 120. These do not cancel out: raising 300 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 192, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 300% of 60. 60% of 300 and 300% of 60 are always equal (both are 60 × 300 ÷ 100 = 180), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
