How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
  2. Multiply: 0.1 × 48 = 4.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.8 ÷ 48 × 100 = 10%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/48, so part = 10 × 48 ÷ 100 = 4.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =10%*48. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.8 is the 10% share of 48. The remaining 90% is 43.2, and the two parts add back up to 48.

Discounts: 10% off an item priced $48 saves $4.8, so you pay $43.2.

Adding and taking away 10%

Increasing 48 by 10% gives 52.8 and decreasing it by 10% gives 43.2. These do not cancel out: raising 48 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 47.52, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 48% of 10. 10% of 48 and 48% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 48 ÷ 100 = 4.8), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
