How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 53 = 5.3
- Check: Work backwards: 5.3 ÷ 53 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/53, so part = 10 × 53 ÷ 100 = 5.3. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*53. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
5.3 is the 10% share of 53. The remaining 90% is 47.7, and the two parts add back up to 53.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $53 saves $5.3, so you pay $47.7.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 53 by 10% gives 58.3 and decreasing it by 10% gives 47.7. These do not cancel out: raising 53 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 52.47, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
