How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
  2. Multiply: 0.1 × 7 = 0.7
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.7 ÷ 7 × 100 = 10%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/7, so part = 10 × 7 ÷ 100 = 0.7. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =10%*7. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.7 is the 10% share of 7. The remaining 90% is 6.3, and the two parts add back up to 7.

Discounts: 10% off an item priced $7 saves $0.7, so you pay $6.3.

Adding and taking away 10%

Increasing 7 by 10% gives 7.7 and decreasing it by 10% gives 6.3. These do not cancel out: raising 7 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 6.93, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
